Do I have to believe the Earth is only a few thousand years old to be a Christian, or believe the Bible?

NO. Becoming a Christian has nothing to do with the age of the earth - only belief and sincere acceptance of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. If you ask God to reveal the truth he will.
