to Questions - Creation vs.
Evolution
Why weren't there rainbows
before the flood, if laws of physics of refracted light existed?
The Bible doesn't state that refracted
light (i.e. "rainbows") didn't exist before the flood. Any mist refracts
light passing through it. The language simply states that God "set the
rainbow in the clouds as a sign of his covenant". Rainbows existed prior
to the flood. Only now, God has redefined it as a "sign" of a "covenant".
People often make covenants using something as a sign that already exists.
For example a wedding ring is just a ring with no significance until it is
placed on a bride's finger as a sign of a covenant. In this case, simple
refracted light in the clouds, now became a sign of God's covenant.
God doesn't always work within the laws of
chemistry and physics He created. However, I've found that when you search
hard, often you find He does. This need not lessen His miraculous power in
any way, however. Hopefully this question, stemming from either
misunderstanding of Hebrew, or imprecise reading of the text--perhaps by
friends, relatives and pastors--have been answered in a way that finally
makes sense to you.
